Description

Spoleto Bascinet Helmet for Armored Combat

Spoleto bascinet helmet for armored combat is a transitional-style helmet based on 14th-century visual sources. Fighters also know similar helmets as “Gryphon” helmets in the sport.

This helmet fits 14th-century and transitional armor kits. However, it is not suitable for 15th-century armor kits, according to common authenticity requirements for this helmet style.

TL;DR

  • Transitional-style bascinet for armored combat
  • Based on 14th-century period art
  • Approved for 14th-century and transitional armor kits
  • Not suitable for 15th-century armor kits
  • Hardened 30HGSA steel
  • Dome thickness: 3 mm (0.12 in) top, 2 mm (0.08 in) lower section
  • Visor thickness: 2 mm (0.08 in)
  • Steel riveted chainmail aventail
  • Additional steel plates under the chainmail
  • Weight: 7.36 kg (16.23 lb)
  • 2 strap sets plus Simon strap
  • Visor secured with button and strap
  • Two-layer helmet liner: foam and EVA

The Spoleto bascinet uses a side-pivoting visor with a longer flat face and no chin plate. This style appears in mid-to-late 14th-century sources, before later 15th-century helmet shapes became dominant.

We make the helmet from hardened 30HGSA steel. The dome uses 3 mm (0.12 in) steel on top and 2 mm (0.08 in) steel on the lower section. As a result, the helmet gives stronger protection where overhead hits usually land hardest.

The visor uses 2 mm (0.08 in) steel. It protects the face while keeping the historical profile clean and recognizable. Also, the button and strap system keeps the visor secured during grappling, falls, and repeated contact.

The helmet comes with steel riveted chainmail and additional steel plates under the chainmail. This gives extra coverage around the neck and lower head area, which matters when strikes come from the side or behind in mass battles.

Inside, the helmet uses a two-layer liner made from foam and EVA. The liner helps manage impact and improves fit. Plus, 2 strap sets and a Simon strap keep the helmet stable when you run, wrestle, or get pushed against the list.

Helmets FAQ

Classic bascinets are one of the most versatile and widely accepted choices in armored combat. Whether it’s a clapvisor, spoletto, nasal bascinet, or bascinet with a cross, these models offer solid protection — especially around the eyes — and are compatible with most common armor kits used in tournaments.

Their design balances protection, breathability, and visibility, making them a reliable choice for both new and experienced fighters.

To ensure the helmet for armored combat fits correctly, take your measurements without any padding, using a tailor’s measuring tape.

Refer to the diagram:

  • A – Maximum head circumference measured horizontally around the widest part of the head (typically from the forehead across the back of the skull).
  • B – Vertical distance from the center of the eye level straight down to the top of the shoulder. This helps us determine the appropriate helmet length to ensure full coverage without restriction.

For the best fit, please double-check your measurements and include them in centimeters.

If there are any specific considerations — such as plans to wear additional padding, a request for reinforced vision protection (e.g., extra eye bars), or anything else that might influence the build — please mention this in the order comments during checkout. We take these details into account during production to ensure your helmet arrives ready and optimized for use.
